Frequently Asked Questions

What languages are offered for counseling?

Counseling, life coaching and workshops are completed using English. Reception is both English and Korean.

I speak English but my partner speaks Korean (or another language), is it possible to do couples counseling?

The success of couples counseling is based on effective communication. Therefore, it is important that the counseling is done in one language and is done in the primary language spoken in the relationship. If English is the main language spoken in the relationship then couples counseling should be done using English. To avoid communication issues, counseling should not be completed using more than one language.

How long should I book my session for?

For individual therapy and life coaching sessions 60 minutes is typically enough time but can be extended to 90 minutes if the client prefers. For couples and family sessions 90 minutes is recommended as they can be very complex and 60 minutes is typically not sufficient time to allow all parties to communicate their needs.

How often should I come in for counseling?

This is something that your counselor will discuss with you during your first counseling session. However, while there may be exceptions, it is generally advisable to plan on scheduling sessions weekly or every second week. Duration of treatment is dependent on a number of factors, including the severity of the concern for which help is being sought.

Is everything confidential?

Conversations with the counsellor are kept in strict confidence. This includes the handling of files that contain case notes, records, and psychological test results. If there is a need or desire to disclose information from files with another professional such as a medical doctor, lawyer, pastor, or third party billing source, the client will be consulted first and asked to sign a release of information document.

Legal Limitations to Confidentiality:

  • Counselors are required by law to report to the appropriate authorities if there is physical or sexual abuse of a child under the age of 18 or if there is reason to believe a person’s life is in jeopardy.

  • If a judge subpoenas a counselor to testify in court or to release the contents of a file, the counselor is required to do so.
